JUST IN: ONE CONFIRMED DEAD AS GUNMEN RAZE IMO COMMISSIONER’S HOME, OTHERS
Gunmen set Emeka Okoronkwo, the commissioner for youth and sports in Imo State, on fire in the early hours of Tuesday.
The incident took place in the Amagu Ihube hamlet in the state’s Okigwe Local Government Area.
Nnamdi Obiaraeri, a former dean of the law school at Imo State University in Owerri who served as commissioner for information, youth and sports, and land and urban planning during the administrations of former governors Ikedi Ohakim and Rochas Okorocha, also lost his country home to fire.
Emeka Ngwu, a retired director of the Department of State Services, also had his country home burned down. Two other notable sons in the neighborhood had their homes burned down as well.
According to the accounts obtained, an elderly woman who was in Ngwu’s home was killed by the fire after being caught up in it.
Emeka Okoronkwo, the state’s commissioner for youth and sports, informed news reporters that his home had been set on fire.
Henry Okoye, the state police’s spokesperson, confirmed the incident and said an investigation had started with the goal of apprehending the eluding suspects.
With the burning of Dr. Nnaemeka Obiaraeri, a Labour Party candidate for the Imo State House of Assembly, and Okey Unam, a Labour Party candidate for the House of Representatives, Ihube has recently become a hub of criminal activity.
