OIL PIPELINE VANDALS ABSCONDS AFTER POLICE ARRIVES CRIME SCENE
Early on Saturday morning, a group of oil thieves broke into a NNPC pipe at Goodluck Jonathan Estate, Idimu-pipeline road, Lagos, with the intention of unlawfully filling a tanker with premium motor spirit.
The oil thieves, who later abandoned the act, escaping in the process, upon the arrival of personnel of the Nigeria Police from the Idimu Division, according to sources, arrived in the area in large numbers with the intention of illegally drilling oil out of the pipeline, but for the intervention of the police.
ACP Gbenga Adeoye, the region Commander of Area ‘M’ Command, claimed that at around three in the morning local time, he received a call from an unknown source informing him of criminal activity in the region. He then took immediate action.
Idowu Owohunwa, the commissioner of police, stated when he arrived at the scene of the event on Saturday that the command would investigate the cause of the incident and that the NNPC technical team was on the spot to secure the area.
Owohunwa, who stated that the force will continue to engage with other security agencies and harness its intelligence network, recommended residents regularly interact with the police.
The Nigeria Security and Civil Defense Corps has detained ten suspects for pipeline damage so far this year. Pipeline vandalism has become a common occurrence in the state in recent weeks.
