ROBERTO MANCINI RESIGNS AS ITALY HEAD COACH
Roberto Mancini has resigned as the head coach of the Italy national team.
The 58-year-old handed in his resignation letter on Saturday evening after five years in charge.
Mancini guided the Azzurri to their first trophy since the 2006 World Cup at the 2020 European Championships, and came third in the 2021 and 2023 Nations League finals.
The Italian Football Federation said that they will announce his replacement in the next few days, with critical Euro qualifiers against North Macedonia and Ukraine awaiting in early September as they look to play catch-up in the group.
He joined in May 2018 on the back of an unfortunate period during which they failed to qualify for the 2018 World Cup under Gian Piero Ventura – the first time they had missed out on football’s biggest tournament since 1958.
The former Manchester City manager went on to lead them on a record-breaking 37-game unbeaten run, lasting three years from October 2018 to October 2021.
A win on penalties over England in the final of the 2020 European Championships was the undeniable highlight of his reign but failure to qualify for the 2022 World Cup after a loss to Macedonia in the play-offs ushered in darker days.
‘The Italian Football Federation announces that it has taken note of the resignation of Roberto Mancini from the position of coach of the Italian national team, received late yesterday evening,’ a statement read.
‘Thus concludes a significant page in the history of the Azzurri, which began in May 2018 and concluded with the 2023 Nations League Finals; in between, the victory at Euro 2020, a triumph conquered by a group in which all the individuals have known how to become a team.’
