Suspected vandals have destroyed newly planted roadside trees along the route leading to the Government House in Nassarawa, Kano, sparking environmental and political concerns in the state.
The incident reportedly occurred early Monday morning and targeted trees planted months ago by the Kano State Government as part of an urban beautification and climate initiative.
The affected area, located within Kano metropolis, had been part of ongoing efforts to improve environmental sustainability through large-scale greening projects.
The Commissioner for Environment, Dahir Hashim, confirmed the incident by sharing images of the damaged trees on his official Facebook page, expressing disappointment over the destruction.
He lamented the difficulty involved in nurturing the trees, noting that significant effort had gone into their growth over the past year before they were vandalized.
While no group has claimed responsibility, the incident comes amid heightened political activity in Kano. Some observers believe the act may be linked to rising political tensions in the state, although no evidence has been established to support this claim.
As of the time of this report, the police have yet to issue an official statement identifying suspects or confirming any investigation.
Environmental advocates have condemned the act, warning that it undermines efforts to promote urban renewal, environmental protection, and climate resilience.
The destruction is also seen as a setback to the state’s broader agenda to improve public spaces and promote ecological balance. Authorities are expected to step up surveillance and community engagement to prevent further incidents.
