NATIONAL EMBARRASSMENT: ENYIMBA BLASTED OVER ‘HILARIOUS’ JERSEY IN WYDAD DEFEAT
The defending Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) champions, Enyimba, have come under fire over the hilarious jersey worn by some of their players in the African Football League.
Enyimba hosted Morrocan side, Wydad Athletic Club, in the first leg of the quarterfinal of the billion-dollar tournament.
The People’s Elephant suffered defeat on home soil, losing by a lone goal to their North African opponent in their first-leg quarter-final clash on Sunday.
Wydad captain, Yayha Jabrane scored the only goal that separated both sides at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium, Uyo.
The Nigerian champions were reduced to 10 men when Alalibo Somiari was sent off late in the game.
However, it was the embarrassment from the kits some of the players wore that generated attention on social media, with fans calling out Enyimba.
The name and jersey number of one of the team’s players, Innocent, were handwritten on his shirt, rather than the standard printed version.
The reason for this unusual occurrence remains a mystery, but fans on social media have expressed their dismay at the lack of professionalism exhibited by the club and its chairman.
Football analyst Olawale Quadry has tagged Enyimba jersey a “national embarrassment’ as it appears the club lacked a complete set of jerseys.
This incident is particularly surprising given that the winners of last season’s league were presented with a one hundred million naira cash prize, which should have eased any potential financial difficulties the club might have faced.
