UPDATE: NASS REJECTS JUDICIARY BUDGET, GIVES MINISTER 24HRS TO MAKE APPEARANCE
The judiciary budget was unanimously rejected by the Senate and House of Representatives combined NASS committee on Wednesday.
In addition, it granted the Minister of National Planning and the DG budget 24 hours notice to appear before it about inadequate funding allotment to the Nigerian judiciary, an action they contend jeopardises their autonomy and capacity to operate efficiently.
In the 2024 budget, the judiciary has been allotted N5.3 billion for capital expenditures and N8.8 billion for recurrent expenses.
This is in line with the statement made by Mr. Lateef Fagbemi, the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, who just made an appearance before the Senate Committee on Judiciary to request more funds.
The minister pleaded with the committee to back the ministry, saying it was essential to advancing the present administration’s plan for the legal system.
