By Sefiu Ajape
According to reports, Nigerian forward, Victor Osimhen has acknowledged that his teammate’s motivation for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations coming up next Year in Ivory Coast will come from winning the CAF African Footballer of the Year award.
Osimhen faced fierce opposition on Monday from Moroccan full-back, Achraf Hakimi and Egyptian striker, Mohammed Salah, demonstrating his outstanding journey for both club and country in the year under review.
“We are ready and preparing very well,” Osimhen told CAF.
“The squad is in high spirits. We are raring to go and hope that we shall do well there.”
Nigeria has three AFCON championships (1980, 1994, and 2013).
The hosts, Equatorial Guinea, and Guinea Bissau are in Group A with the Super Eagles.
Osimhen aspires to continue his excellent form next year, which saw him score 27 goals for Napoli in all competitions this year – tied with Egyptian Mohamed Salah for the most goals scored by an African player in the top five European leagues.
With his 47th Serie-A goal against Fiorentina in May 2023, Osimhen passed George Weah (46 goals) as the highest-scoring African player in the history of the competition.
Osimhen was also the highest goal scorer in the AFCON 2023 qualifiers with 10 goals.
