BIRMINGHAM APPOINTS MOWBRAY AS REPLACEMENT FOR SACKED WAYNE ROONEY
By Sefiu Ajape
Tony Mowbray was appointed manager of Birmingham on Monday, taking over for the fired Wayne Rooney.
Former West Brom and Sunderland manager Mowbray reached an agreement with the Championship’s struggling team for a two-and-a-half-year contract.
Following the firings of Rooney and John Eustace, he is Birmingham’s third manager of the current campaign.
“I am excited to be joining Birmingham at this time. I can’t wait to get back on the training pitch and start working with this talented group of players,” Mowbray said.
“I know from personal experience how passionate Bluenoses are, home and away, and I’m looking forward to having their full support for the team starting on Saturday at home to Swansea.”
Despite leading Sunderland to the play-offs the previous season, Mowbray was fired by the club in December following a 15-month tenure.
After taking over for Eustace in October, former Manchester United and England player Rooney was fired by Birmingham after just 83 days in command.
Birmingham dropped from sixth to twentieth place in the championship as Rooney could only muster two victories in fifteen games.
