BREAKING: COURT AWARDS N100 MILLION AGAINST FG FOR VIOLATION OF EMEFIELE’S RIGHT
Judge Olukayode Adeniyi of the Federal Capital Territory High Court in Abuja has granted Godwin Emefiele, the former governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), 100 million naira as compensation for the Federal Government’s breach of his right to personal liberty.
The Court further ruled that his lengthy incarceration without charge or trial constituted a blatant breach of his constitutional rights.
It also prohibited Emefiele from being arrested or detained by the Federal Government or its representatives in the absence of a court order.
The ruling was made in a basic human rights lawsuit that the former governor of CBN brought after spending an extended period of time under the Department of State Services’ custody.
He had requested that the court prohibit the respondents from making any more arrests or detentions against him and order them to pay N1 billion in damages.
On June 10, 2023, the former head of the CBN was taken into custody not long after President Bola Tinubu had suspended him.
