BREAKING: S’COURT UPHOLDS UMO ENO AS AKWA IBOM GOV
The Peoples Democratic Party’s (PDP) Umo Eno was duly elected as the governor of Akwa Ibom State, and the Supreme Court upheld this decision, rejecting the petitions of the three parties that had challenged the results of the March 18, 2023, election.
This comes after the Young Progressives Party (YPP), the Action Alliance (AC), and the All Progressives Congress (APC) had their appeals dismissed by the Supreme Court panel led by Justice Uwani Abba-Aji. The reason given for this was the governor’s disqualification due to accusations of certificate forgery, which the governor refuted.
Umo Eno emerged as the PDP nominee for the state after a primary, and the Court of Appeal supported the decision to reject the lawsuit.
On the grounds that Eno allegedly falsified a West African Examination Certificate (WAEC), which he submitted to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for the election, Okon had moved for the court to disqualify Eno.
The claim was dismissed by the appeal court for lack of merit, and the plaintiff was awarded a sum of 15 million naira.
The judge ruled that Okon had made assumptions in his arguments and was unable to provide the court with evidence indicating Eno had falsified his certifications.
