ASUU THREATENS STRIKE OVER SHODDY TREATMENT OF DEMANDS

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has warned that members may be compelled to go on a statewide walkout because they are unhappy with how the federal and state governments are handling their requests.
The decision was made following a meeting of the union’s national executive council, according to a statement issued by Professor Emmanuel Osodeke, president of the organization.
He claims that in the past ten years, governments have not made any significant attempts to address their requests.
He highlighted a number of demands, including the payment of all earned academic allowances, including withholding wages and promotion arrears, the integrity of duly elected governing councils, a review of the 2009 federal government and ASUU agreement, and a revitalization fund for public universities.
Additional concerns include the spread of public institutions, the purported illegal hiring practices in colleges, and the ongoing use of the new Integrated Payroll and Personnel Information System (IPPIS) and Treasury Single Account (TSA).
The union will meet again in two weeks, starting on Saturday, to assess the situation and decide how best to proceed with resolving the concerns.
The action follows President Bola Tinubu’s approval in January of the allocation of more than N683 billion as a 2024 intervention fund for the nation’s public postsecondary education system.
The payment of N5.1 billion for the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) National Research Fund 2023 Grant Cycle was authorized by FG in January as well.
