CRIME: POLICE ARREST MAN OVER RAPE OF 16-YEAR-OLD GIRL IN OGUN
Police operatives have arrested a 20-year-old man for allegedly raping and impregnating a 16-year-old girl in the Olodo Community of Odeda Local Government Area of Ogun State.
The suspect, Akeem Sumonu, was arrested on Tuesday by operatives stationed at the community’s security post.
The spokesperson for the Ogun State Police Command, Omolola Odutola, disclosed this in a statement issued to journalists on Thursday in Abeokuta, the state capital.
The survivor’s mother, identified only as Christiana, informed the police that the suspect allegedly violently attacked her daughter, raped her in October 2024, and later threatened her to keep the act secret.
The source said due to the fear the suspect had instilled in the teenager, she kept the incident a secret until her mother noticed unusual changes in her behaviour and injuries sustained after the alleged act.
“The victim hid the incident from her parents until the complainant noticed unusual signs on her body,” she said.
“She then confided in her mother, revealing that the suspect had forcibly raped her, causing her to lose her virginity, and had threatened her not to tell anyone.”
The suspect was said to have confessed to the crime during interrogation by operatives.\
The police spokesperson said that the situation worsened when the medical report on the survivor revealed she was eight weeks pregnant, with the pregnancy suspected to be a result of the alleged act
“The suspect has been arrested and detained. Further investigation will take place once the case is transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department,” she added.
