The Kano State Government has imposed an immediate ban on the importation of scrap materials from Nigeria’s Northeastern region following a deadly explosion that claimed the lives of 15 workers at a scrap site in Gidan Karfe, along the Eastern Bypass in Kano.
The announcement was made on Tuesday by the State Commissioner for Internal Security, Ibrahim Umaru, during a meeting with the Scrap Dealers Association of Nigeria. The Commissioner revealed that preliminary investigations linked the tragic explosion to explosive devices unknowingly transported from the Northeast, a region heavily impacted by years of Boko Haram insurgency.
Umaru emphasized that the decision was taken to prevent further loss of lives and ensure public safety. “The Northeastern states have been faced with Boko Haram insurgency for quite some time, and this has unfortunately led to some scrap dealers unsuspectingly moving explosive devices into Kano State,” he said.
He added that the state would collaborate with security agencies and other relevant authorities to monitor the movement of scrap materials and strengthen safety protocols.
Reacting to the development, the Chairman of the Association of Scrap Dealers in Northern Nigeria, Aminu Hassan, expressed support for the government’s decision. He appealed for training programs to help scrap dealers identify potentially dangerous items and prevent similar tragedies.
“We urge the state government to provide proper training to scrap dealers so that we can identify and avoid moving dangerous items,” Hassan said. He also confirmed that the association had already instructed its members to cease the transportation of scrap from conflict-affected zones.
The Gidan Karfe explosion, which sent shockwaves through Kano, was described by eyewitnesses as devastating, with scenes of destruction and panic. Authorities have launched a full investigation to trace the origin of the explosive material and prevent a recurrence.
