A fire outbreak in the early hours of Wednesday destroyed five shops beside the Olowo-Ifon Shopping Complex in the Orita Challenge area of Ibadan, Oyo State.
The incident, which occurred at approximately 2:24 a.m., was confirmed by the Chairman of the Oyo State Fire Service, Maroof Akinwande, in a statement released the same day.
According to Akinwande, firefighters responded swiftly to the emergency and were able to contain the blaze, preventing it from spreading to nearby shops and the main shopping complex.
“Our personnel acted quickly and salvaged properties worth millions. Unfortunately, five out of eleven shops were destroyed,” he said.
Preliminary investigations point to an electrical surge that ignited flammable materials in one of the affected shops as the likely cause of the fire.
Akinwande used the opportunity to advise residents and business owners to take fire safety seriously and implement preventive measures to avert future disasters.
