The Enugu State Police Command has successfully rescued six children who were stolen and trafficked, following a series of coordinated operations carried out between June 30 and July 16, 2025.

In the course of the operations, the command also apprehended 10 suspects linked to both local and cross-border child trafficking syndicates.

This was revealed in a statement issued on Saturday by the command’s spokesperson, SP Daniel Ndukwe, who described the development as a major stride in the ongoing fight against child theft and trafficking in the state.

Among those rescued are a one-year-seven-month-old boy and a 14-year-old girl who had been trafficked to Ghana, the statement noted.

The statement read, “On July 15, 2025, at about 9:30 p.m., operatives from the Anti-Cultism Tactical Squad of the Command, working with Neighbourhood Watch members, arrested Chiaha Josephine (female, aged 64) and Ozomma Christopher Ubanagum (male, 67) in Ezeagu LGA.

“Two trafficked children were rescued – Loveth Mfonobong (female, aged 16) and Benjamin Alex Okon (male, aged 12). Josephine confessed to buying Loveth in 2021 for ₦900,000 and Benjamin in 2024 for ₦1,400,000.”

The Commissioner of Police, CP Mamman Giwa, commended the operatives’ professionalism and swift responses, cautioning parents and guardians to be watchful and protect their children.

“We commend the operatives’ professionalism and swift responses. We urge parents and guardians to be vigilant and resist involvement in human trafficking under any guise,” Giwa said.

The command has reaffirmed its commitment to fighting crimes against children and urged the public to provide timely and credible information to aid in the fight against child trafficking.

The remaining arrested suspects, according to the statement, will be arraigned in court after investigations, adding that efforts are underway to apprehend other members of the syndicate at large.
