The Ondo State Police Command has foiled an alleged plot by suspected criminals to carry out attacks on government infrastructure using Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) in Akure and other parts of the state.
The suspects were reportedly planning the attacks after identifying specific targets and infiltrating the state.
Commissioner of Police in the state, Adebowale Lawal, disclosed this on Thursday during a press briefing at the command headquarters, saying operatives acted on intelligence reports and were deployed to the affected areas.
He stated that the suspects were arrested before the plan could be executed, adding that six individuals were apprehended and materials suspected to be used in making IEDs were recovered.
Lawal listed the suspects as Adekunle Prosper (56), Ojo Olumide (39), Tope Kolawole (40), Ahmed Salihu (40), Bolaji Adebowale (46), and Gbadebo Abidemi (43).
He further revealed that a search of the scene and subsequent raid on their residence led to the recovery of several items, including 217 bottles, a bag of sugar, suspected charms, 17 mobile phones, ₦187,000 cash, two HP laptops, eight slings, one knife, an external hard drive, two identity cards, a NIN card, and two motorcycles among others.
“Initial assessments suggest that some of the recovered items were meant for the fabrication of explosive devices, while others were likely to support coordinated criminal operations.
“Preliminary investigation findings show that the group was actively involved in assembling IEDs allegedly intended for use against government infrastructure, with indications that their activities may extend beyond the state capital to other parts of the country.”
