This was disclosed on Wednesday in an official statement by the command’s Public Relations Officer, Abdullahi Adamu.
“The general public is hereby informed that the Nigerian Correctional Service, Yobe State Command, has confirmed the escape of an inmate from the Medium Security Custodial Centre in Potiskum,” the statement said.
According to the notice, the incident occurred on April 13 when a vehicle conveying inmates from the facility to Damaturu was involved in a traffic crash.
“The incident happened during ongoing efforts to rescue victims of the crash, at which point the inmate took advantage of the situation to escape,” the statement added.
The fugitive has been identified as Dahiru Mohammed, a 30-year-old from Askiwari village via Tarmuwa.
He is registered under prison number J/1539/24 and was taken into custody on November 29, 2024.
The command described Mohammed as a dangerous individual and urged the public to steer clear of him.
“The escaped inmate is considered dangerous, and members of the public are strongly advised not to engage with him,” the statement cautioned.
It also appealed to anyone with useful information to report promptly.
“Anyone with knowledge of his whereabouts, or who noticed suspicious activity around the Potiskum–Damaturu road at the time of the accident, should immediately report to the nearest police station or correctional facility,” the statement said.
