President Bola Tinubu has congratulated Romuald Wadagni on his election as President of the Republic of Benin, describing the outcome as a reflection of the confidence the Beninese people have in his vision and record of public service.
Wadagni, who currently serves as Benin Republic’s Minister of Finance, won a decisive majority in the presidential election held on April 12, 2026.
In a personally signed letter to the president-elect on Thursday, Tinubu praised the government and people of Benin for conducting a peaceful election and pledged Nigeria’s readiness to work closely with the incoming administration.
He stated, “This transition marks a significant chapter in your nation’s history. I commend the people of Benin for their resilience and commitment to the democratic process and to maintaining peace during the election cycle.”
The President referenced the longstanding relationship between both countries as a foundation for stronger cooperation.
He said, “Our two nations share a long history of friendship, cultural ties, and cooperation.”
“I look forward to working closely with your administration to further strengthen our bilateral relations, improve regional security, and advance economic prosperity within the ECOWAS sub-region and the African Union.”
Tinubu assured Wadagni of Nigeria’s support as he prepares to take office, saying: “As you prepare to assume the onerous responsibilities of the high office of the Presidency, I wish you great wisdom, fortitude, and success.
“You can rest assured of my unwavering support and cooperation.”
Nigeria and the Benin Republic share an extensive but economically important border, with trade, security collaboration, and informal cross-border movement forming the foundation of their bilateral relations.
Historically, Benin Republic has also served as a major transit route for goods entering Nigeria’s southwest region.
