The Nigerian Red Cross Society, with assistance from the British Red Cross Disaster Management team in Lagos, has launched the second phase of its Food Security and Livelihood Initiative in the Agboyi community, Agboyi/Ketu LCDA, Lagos State, aimed at benefiting hundreds of at-risk households.
This was contained in a statement by the Branch Communication Officer, Olushola Tejuosho, on Friday.
According to the statement, Tejuosho noted that the move was in continuation of the gains recorded in the first phase of the project.
The Nigerian Red Cross Society, with assistance from the British Red Cross Disaster Management team in Lagos, has initiated the second phase of its Food Security and Livelihood initiative in Agboyi Community, Agboyi/Ketu LCDA, Lagos State.
“This initiative follows the remarkable success of the first phase in December 2024, during which 180 households each received ₦310,000 to strengthen their businesses. The funds empowered families to become more self-reliant, especially in navigating the country’s current challenging economic climate and to build their resilience against the impact of floods”, the statement partly read.
He remarked that the new stage would extend to additional households through direct financial assistance, asserting, “Building upon this accomplishment, the subsequent phase will offer direct entrepreneurial assistance to 270 households within the community. The initiative commenced yesterday with the training of 40 Red Cross volunteers, who have now been assigned to initiate the enrollment of beneficiaries in Agboyi 1, 2, and 3 Communities. ”
The statement further clarified that the intervention would also empower beneficiaries with the skills to manage the funds efficiently.
“As part of the process, all registered beneficiaries will participate in a compulsory two-day financial literacy training to equip them with essential money management and business skills. Following the training, beneficiaries will receive their funds via pre-loaded ATM cards”, it added.
Tejuosho also noted that the project was part of a wider disaster management effort targeted at flood-prone areas, saying, “This programme forms part of a long-term disaster management intervention that has been ongoing in Agboyi for the past five years in response to recurrent flooding in the area. By targeting both immediate needs and long-term resilience, the initiative aims to strengthen the livelihoods of vulnerable households and promote sustainable recovery.”
