At least five persons sustained injuries in a traffic accident involving a fuel tanker and a commercial bus at Toyota Bus Stop, inward Oshodi, Lagos State.

The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) confirmed the incident in a statement on Friday, noting that it occurred on Thursday near The Guardian newspaper headquarters.

According to LASTMA’s Director of Public Affairs and Enlightenment, Adebayo Taofiq, preliminary investigations from the Oloto Police Division revealed that the PMS-laden tanker, with registration number T28128LA, suffered sudden brake failure while on top speed and rammed into a moving Volkswagen T4 commercial bus, GGE 526 YG, fully loaded with passengers.

The agency said its officers “executed an urgent, precise and seamlessly coordinated rescue operation,” saving three women and two men, including the bus driver.

While one victim was rushed to a nearby hospital by a good Samaritan, personnel from the Lagos State Ambulance Service and the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency’s Rescue Unit conveyed the remaining injured passengers to different hospitals for emergency treatment.

LASTMA Corps Marshal, Bakare-Oki, extended sympathy to the victims and wished them a speedy recovery. He attributed the crash to a “brazen disregard for statutory speed limits” and stressed that proper speed regulation and regular vehicle maintenance, especially of braking systems, could have prevented the incident.

He urged tanker and heavy-duty vehicle operators to keep their machinery in flawless mechanical condition and called on truck owners to institutionalise continuous training and retraining for their drivers, emphasising that “the sanctity of human life must remain the paramount consideration in all road transport operations.”
