The Consultant Paediatrician at the General Hospital, Ijede, Dr. Olufunke Olugbade, has called on breastfeeding mothers and pregnant women to support the Lagos State Government’s advocacy on exclusive breastfeeding.

She made the appeal during an event held at the hospital to mark the 2025 World Breastfeeding Week.

Dr. Olugbade highlighted the numerous benefits of exclusive breastfeeding, noting that it helps prevent breast cancer in women, aids the mother’s recovery after childbirth, restores the body to its normal physiological state, and is cost-effective. She added that exclusive breastfeeding boosts a baby’s intelligence quotient, strengthens maternal bonding, enhances the immune system, and reduces the risk of infectious diseases.

According to her, “Exclusive breastfeeding is not just beneficial for the baby but also vital for the mother’s health and overall well-being. It is a natural, affordable and sustainable way to give a child the best start in life.”

World Breastfeeding Week is celebrated annually from August 1 to 7, as designated by the World Health Organization (WHO). The theme for the 2025 edition is “Prioritise Breastfeeding: Create Sustainable Support Systems.”
