NINE-MAN RENNES SUFFER 4-0 DEFEAT TO LORIENT AFTER EARLY RED CARDS
Agency Report
A week after opening their Ligue 1 campaign with a gritty win over Marseille while playing with 10 men, Rennes collapsed 4-0 away to Lorient on Sunday after being reduced to nine men inside the first 10 minutes.
Rennes’ troubles began before kickoff as coach Habib Beye dropped Jordanian winger Moussa Al-Tamari for arriving late to a pre-match meeting. New signing Mahdi Camara replaced him but lasted only four minutes before being sent off for catching Lorient’s Dermane Karim in the head with his boot. Six minutes later, defender Christopher Wooh was shown red for bringing down Aiyegun Tosin as the last man.
According to Opta, no Ligue 1 team since 1992 had previously received two red cards within the opening 10 minutes of a match.
Despite going down to nine men, Rennes almost took the lead when Seko Fofana struck the woodwork in the 21st minute. But Sambou Soumano finally broke the deadlock in first-half stoppage time before Lorient ran riot in the second half, with goals from Tosin, Pablo Pagis, and Theo Le Bris sealing a comfortable win.
“Unfortunately, both red cards were deserved,” admitted Beye. “Once we were down to nine men, it was a match we could no longer control.”
The chaotic start to Rennes’ season followed last week’s dramatic aftermath of their win over Marseille, which sparked a dressing-room brawl. The incident led Marseille to place Adrien Rabiot and Jonathan Rowe on the transfer list. Rowe has since joined Bologna in Serie A, while coach Roberto De Zerbi hinted Rabiot could be forgiven after Marseille’s 4-2 win at Paris FC on Saturday.
Elsewhere, Lyon continued their strong start by beating Metz 3-0, Nice claimed their first win with a 3-1 victory over Auxerre, and defending champions Paris Saint-Germain edged Angers 1-0 on Friday thanks to a Fabian Ruiz goal.
