The Anambra State Police Command has uncovered and dismantled an illegal factory producing fake soft drinks in Okpoko, Ogbaru Local Government Area of the state.
Police operatives attached to the Rapid Response Squad, Awkuzu, carried out the operation on September 3, 2025, leading to the arrest of one suspect, identified as 48-year-old Chigozie Okafor.
Spokesman of the command, Tochukwu Ikenga, disclosed the development in a statement on Sunday, noting that several toxic products branded as “Iyi Obeleagu Juice” were recovered at the scene.

According to Ikenga, the drinks were being produced without approval from the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) and posed serious health risks to both adults and children.
He added that the Commissioner of Police in the state, Ikioye Orutugu, has ordered a thorough investigation to identify and apprehend other accomplices linked to the illicit factory.
The CP also warned individuals engaging in the production of fake or substandard consumables to desist immediately, stressing that the Command remains committed to safeguarding public health.
Illegal factories producing counterfeit consumables remain a recurring public health concern in Anambra State. In October 2024, a task force uncovered a fake wine factory in Nkpor where imitation brands were being produced, while in June 2024, police sealed a counterfeit pharmaceutical factory in Umuoji, Idemili North.
