GHANA JAILS THREE NIGERIANS 96 YEARS FOR CAR THEFT IN KUMASI

The Atasemanso Circuit Court in Ghana has sentenced three Nigerians Francis Friday, Linus Agwazie, and Russell Ekenze to a combined jail term of 96 years for their involvement in multiple cases of car theft within the Kumasi Metropolis.
This was disclosed in a statement on Tuesday by the Head of the Public Affairs Unit of the Ashanti Regional Police, Godwin Ahianyo.
The suspects were arrested on June 20, 2025, after being linked to a string of vehicle thefts in the area. They were arraigned before different courts in July, where a series of convictions resulted in the heavy sentences.
According to Ahianyo, Ekenze initially pleaded guilty and was sentenced to 10 years’ imprisonment with hard labour on July 22. Friday and Agwazie, who pleaded not guilty, were later convicted at Circuit Court 3 on July 23 and handed eight years each on two counts, to run concurrently.
All three men subsequently faced additional charges at Circuit Court 1, where they were sentenced to 20 years each on two counts. Ekenze received a further 10 years at Circuit Court 2 on July 24, also to run concurrently.
“They are currently serving their sentences at the Kumasi Central Prison,” Ahianyo said.
The convictions come amid heightened public concern in Ghana over the involvement of Nigerians in criminal activities. In May, a Tarkwa Circuit Court sentenced a 32-year-old Nigerian woman, Patience Gold, to 20 years’ imprisonment for trafficking four young women one of them HIV-positive into forced prostitution.
Similarly, in July, the Ghana Immigration Service arrested 50 Nigerians in a security raid in Accra for alleged cyberfraud and human trafficking.
Authorities in Ghana have vowed to intensify crackdowns on foreign nationals involved in crime, even as the rising number of Nigerians linked to such offences continues to raise concerns about the country’s international image.
