NPFL: MBWAS TRANSFORMS NASARAWA UNITED FROM RELEGATION FIGHTERS TO TITLE CONTENDERS

Following a decisive 2-0 victory over Katsina United on Matchday 6 of the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL), Nasarawa United has firmly established itself at the summit of the standings, relegating the unbeaten Enyimba to the second position.

Mangut Mbwas, the head coach of the club, is, however, downplaying this advancement for a team that has narrowly avoided relegation in the past two seasons.

Mbwas, who transitioned to Lafia from the nearby Tin City of Jos, where he served as the Coach of Plateau United, has within a few matchdays provided Nasarawa United supporters with hope for a return to a prosperous era.

“We have remain focused. It’s not time for celebration yet because the league is a marathon, and still at its infancy” Mbwas stated during a post-match conference when queried about their victory and current standing.

“It’s a thing of joy to win today. Our response was great because we have been working so hard.

“We actually planned for this, and we are achieving our goals gradually,” he added.

In evaluating the opposition, Katsina United, and their performance, Mbwas emphasized that the scoreline did not reflect an easy victory, attributing their eventual success to a first-half goal from last season’s top scorer, Anas Yusuf.

“Katsina United are a team that could deny you win because they won’t allow you to play. The first-half goal gave us an edge to score the second one, even though we squandered some flurry of chances.

“We should have scored more than two goals today, but it seems my players were over anxious in front of goal, but we are working towards correcting all of those”.

Looking ahead, the former captain of Heartland of Owerri believes they will apply the lessons learned from previous errors, particularly as they prepare to face Insurance in Benin on Matchday 7.

“In our next game, it won’t be easy, but my team is growing in confidence, game in, game out, and I believe we could win anywhere.” asserted Mbwas.

The team’s proficiency on the field was manifest, with the two meticulously crafted goals originating from last season’s leading goal scorer, Anas Yusuf, who scored a powerful shot from thirty-five meters just before halftime, and right-back Abubakar Abdullahi, who executed a superb finish to solidify the victory seventeen minutes before the end of regulation time.
