FIRE SERVICE AVERTS MAJOR DISASTER AS PETROL TANKER OVERTURNS IN ILORIN
Agency Report

A major disaster was averted on Friday morning after a petrol tanker carrying 45,000 litres of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) overturned at Kpasa Bridge along the Ogbomosho Express Road in Eyenkorin, Ilorin, Kwara State.
The incident, which occurred around 8:03 a.m., involved a tanker with registration number ARG 680 SO, reportedly conveying the fuel from Lagos to Sokoto before it lost control and flipped due to brake failure, according to eyewitnesses.
In a statement released, the Head of Media and Publicity of the Kwara State Fire Service, PFO Hassan Hakeem Adekunle, said the swift intervention of firefighters prevented a potential explosion.
“Upon receiving the distress call, our firefighters immediately mobilised to the scene and secured the perimeter to prevent ignition,” Adekunle stated.
He added that the area was “thoroughly drenched to suppress heat emissions from the spilled petrol under the intense sunlight.”
The firefighters reportedly remained on standby as the petrol was safely siphoned into another tanker, ensuring no spark or ignition occurred throughout the recovery operation.
Adekunle commended the professionalism and quick response of the fire service personnel, noting that their actions once again underscored the agency’s commitment to protecting lives and property across Kwara State.
Meanwhile, the Director of the Kwara State Fire Service, Falade John Olumuyiwa, advised motorists — particularly drivers of fuel tankers and other vehicles transporting flammable materials to carry out regular maintenance checks on their braking systems and strictly adhere to road safety standards.
“Safety consciousness remains the best prevention against avoidable disasters on our highways,” Falade warned. “We urge all drivers to take necessary precautions before embarking on any journey, especially when transporting highly combustible products.”
