EEDC COMMENCES SECOND PHASE OF FREE PREPAID METER DISTRIBUTION ACROSS SOUTH-EAST

The Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC) has commenced the second phase of its free prepaid meter distribution under the Meter Acquisition Fund (MAF) “Tranche B” metering programme initiated by the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) to eliminate estimated billing and close Nigeria’s metering gap.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, the Group Head, Corporate Communications, Mr. Emeka Ezeh, said the exercise, which began on November 2, 2025, targets unmetered customers on Service Band “A” feeders across the South-East region.
According to Ezeh, 13,335 customers including those of EEDC’s subsidiary companies will benefit from this phase following a Know Your Customer (KYC) validation exercise.
“These meters and their installation are completely free, and customers are cautioned against making any form of payment to installers or succumbing to inducement or extortion,” Ezeh stated. “This initiative reflects our commitment to improving service transparency and customer satisfaction.”
He noted that the MAF programme is fully funded by contributions from all distribution companies, managed under NERC’s supervision, and customers are not required to make any payments for the meters or their installation.
Ezeh explained that the current phase prioritises Band “A” customers, urging them to verify and update their contact details at their local EEDC customer service offices.
“Our team will be reaching out to customers using the contact information in their existing profiles,” he said.
He recalled that earlier in the year, EEDC had successfully executed “Tranche A”, during which 13,614 Band “A” customers were metered. Once all customers in Band “A” are covered, the company will shift focus to Band “B” customers as part of its systematic plan to close the metering gap.
Ezeh also appealed to customers who may not be captured in this phase to remain patient, assuring that another initiative the Distribution Sector Recovery Project is underway to extend metering coverage further.
While warning against meter bypass and energy theft, he stressed that such acts undermine efficiency and revenue protection efforts.
“Customers should avoid engaging in illegal activities such as meter bypass or energy theft, and report anyone involved in such acts,” Ezeh cautioned.
For further inquiries, Ezeh advised customers to contact EEDC through its call centre (0208 470 0100) or WhatsApp lines (0707 461 0095, 0707 461 0088).
The Meter Acquisition Fund is a financing mechanism supervised by NERC, through which electricity distribution companies pool resources to procure and distribute prepaid meters free of charge to customers across Nigeria.
