Another incident happened in Bokungi Village, Edu Local Government Area of Kwara State, just a day after an attack on a church in Eruku, Ekiti Local Government Area.
Armed men on Wednesday evening attacked rice farmers working on their fields, killing two and abducting four others.
The victims were allegedly surrounded while picking their rice during the busiest harvest hours. The development was confirmed by a community source, who added that data was still being gathered. The attackers, according to the locals, worked for a few minutes before departing. Additional research revealed that the two farmers were slain while attempting to thwart the kidnapping. A Bokungi village leader said that the attackers came as the farmers were finishing up their day’s work at around six of the clock in the evening.
Three farmers fled, while four nearby farmers were taken away. One fled with injuries, while two were shot and killed. Since then, the dead have been buried. Many farmers in Edu Local Government Area have been forced to leave their communities due to growing insecurity, according to community members, especially during harvest season when they are most vulnerable. At the time this report was filed, attempts to contact Mr. Ojo Adekimi, the Kwara State Commissioner of Police, were fruitless.
