The Federal Capital Territory Police Command has thwarted an attempted kidnapping in Guto Village, a border community in Bwari Area Council, following an armed invasion by suspected kidnappers in the early hours of Wednesday.

According to a statement by the command spokesperson, Josephine Adeh, about 30 heavily armed men stormed the community around 1:10 a.m. and attempted to break into a residence with the intention of abducting the occupants.

In response to a distress call, operatives from the Bwari Division Surveillance Team and the Inspector General of Police Special Intervention Squad were swiftly deployed to the scene.

Upon sighting the security teams, the attackers reportedly opened fire, leading to a fierce gun battle. Two suspects were killed during the exchange, while others escaped into nearby bushes and mountainous terrain.

“Upon sighting the responding police teams, the attackers, who had already attempted to forcibly enter the targeted residence, opened fire. The gallant officers engaged the assailants with precision and superior firepower,” Adeh said.

Tragically, one police officer sustained a gunshot injury and was rushed to Bwari General Hospital, where he was confirmed dead.

The Commissioner of Police, FCT Command, CP Miller Dantawaye, commended the operatives for their bravery and professionalism, describing the deceased officer as a “courageous hero who paid the supreme price in the line of duty.”

He extended condolences to the officer’s family and assured residents that the command would intensify efforts to eliminate criminal elements across the territory.

Dantawaye also praised the vigilance of community members and urged residents to remain alert and report suspicious activities using the emergency lines provided by the command.

Bwari Area Council has been one of the most security-challenged corridors in the FCT, with several communities experiencing recurrent threats. The Guto incident adds to the list of recent insecurity concerns faced by border communities.
