The United States House Subcommittee on Africa on Thursday commenced a public hearing to review President Donald Trump’s recent redesignation of Nigeria as a Country of Particular Concern (CPC), a classification reserved for nations accused of severe violations of religious freedom.

The hearing, which began at 5 p.m., aims to assess the implications of the designation. If sustained by the Senate, the CPC status could result in sanctions against Nigerian officials found culpable in acts of religious persecution.

Lawmakers noted that the designation places Nigeria under increased international scrutiny and may also lead to restrictions on certain forms of US bilateral assistance.

The CPC classification is one of the most serious designations under US international religious freedom laws and is typically reserved for countries where systemic, ongoing, and egregious violations are recorded.

The public hearing marks a significant step in determining whether the redesignation will stand and what diplomatic consequences Nigeria may face if the decision is upheld.
