A 19-year-old man believed to be mentally unstable on Thursday fatally stabbed a Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) officer in the Oba Ile community, Akure North Local Government Area of Ondo State.

The tragic incident reportedly occurred when two NSCDC operatives responded to a distress call from the suspect’s mother, who requested assistance in restraining her son after he became violent.

According to a resident who witnessed the incident, “When the boy started misbehaving this morning, his mother invited two civil defence officers to help her chain him. In the process, he overpowered one of the officers, seized his knife and stabbed him.”

Despite being armed, the officer was fatally wounded and later died in hospital.

The NSCDC spokesperson in Ondo State, Daniel Aidamenbor, confirmed the incident, describing it as “unfortunate,” stating the officer was attempting to transport the teenager to a medical facility for treatment when the attack occurred.

Similarly, the spokesperson for the Ondo State Police Command, Olayinka Ayanlade, confirmed the officer’s death, noting he succumbed to his injuries while receiving treatment.

Authorities are expected to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident as residents call for enhanced safety measures during mental health interventions.
