REPS INTERVENE IN DANGOTE-NMDPRA RIFT, INVITE BOTH PARTIES FOR CLARIFICATION

The committee in the House of Representatives that looks after petroleum resources in the downstream sector has taken action to deal with growing conflicts between the Dangote Refinery and the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority. They want to stop more problems from happening in the industry.
The chairman of the committee, Hon. Ikenga Imo Ugochinyere, made the announcement after holding an emergency meeting to address what he called a “growing tension” that is jeopardizing the stability recently gained in the downstream petroleum sector.
“The key issue necessitating this emergency meeting was the renewed tension arising from concerns raised by Alhaji Aliko Dangote and the NMDPRA,” Ugochinyere said. He added that the committee’s primary goal is to preserve the sector’s stability while government and industry stakeholders work to ensure consistent supply, pricing, and regulation in the post-subsidy era.
The committee decided to officially call on both the President of the Dangote Group, Alhaji Aliko Dangote, and the leaders of the NMDPRA to explain the problems causing the disagreement. Ugochinyere said it’s important to understand the main reasons behind the issue so the National Assembly can find long–term solutions.
“We can only find sustainable solutions when we identify the critical issues leading to this tension. That is why the committee resolved to invite Alhaji Aliko Dangote and the NMDPRA chief to meet with us and give insights into what is driving these allegations and counter-allegations,” he said.
To help calm the situation, the committee also asked both sides to stop making public comments and issuing statements through the media while the legislative process is happening. “We decided to ask the opposing groups to pause their arguments, especially the media talks, to make sure the situation doesn’t get worse,” Ugochinyere said.
The committee has gotten petitions about important issues in the industry, like getting import licenses and whether local refineries can meet Nigeria’s daily oil needs.
Ugochinyere promised that these topics will be carefully looked into when Dangote, NMDPRA, and other involved groups come before the committee.
“By the time Alhaji Aliko Dangote, the NMDPRA, and other stakeholders meet with the committee, we will get the real gist of what is happening and come up with resolutions that provide sustainable solutions for the sector,” he said.“By the time Alhaji Aliko Dangote, the NMDPRA, and other stakeholders meet with the committee, we will get the real gist of what is happening and come up with resolutions that provide sustainable solutions for the sector,” he said.
The chairman reminded everyone again that the committee is asking all sides to stop making more accusations so that the House can work on solving the disagreement for the country‘s benefit.
The intervention comes amid heightened public scrutiny of Nigeria’s downstream petroleum industry, with expectations rising around local refining capacity, regulatory clarity, and stable fuel supply.
