An elderly man, identified as Ladan Zubairu, was killed on Monday morning at the Yusuf Garko Mosque in the Maraba Quarters area of Kano, sparking unrest in the community.
It was gathered that Zubairu was attacked while carrying out his early morning religious duty of calling worshippers to prayer. The assailant was reportedly chased by angry residents shortly after the incident, lynched by a mob, and his residence set ablaze before security operatives intervened to restore order.
Speaking with journalists, the deceased’s son, Isa Kasim, said his father had gone out at dawn, as was his routine, to call Muslims to prayer. He explained that after making the first call to prayer, his father usually sat briefly to recite supplications before proceeding with the second call.
According to Kasim, residents later made a grim discovery after the suspect was killed, finding Zubairu’s severed throat wrapped in a nylon bag inside the suspect’s pocket.
Confirming the incident, the Kano State Police Command said officers were swiftly deployed to the area to prevent further violence. The Police Public Relations Officer, CSP Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, said the situation had been brought under control.
“Our officers quickly intervened to restore calm and prevent further escalation. Normalcy has now returned to Maraba Quarters,” Kiyawa stated.
He disclosed that the bodies of both the victim and the suspected attacker were recovered and taken to the Mohammed Abdullahi Wase Teaching Hospital for autopsy.
Kiyawa added that the Commissioner of Police in Kano State, CP Ibrahim Adamu Bakori, had ordered a comprehensive investigation into the incident to establish the circumstances surrounding the killing and the subsequent mob action.
“We are committed to ensuring that anyone found culpable will face the full force of the law,” he said.
The police have appealed to residents of the area to remain calm and cooperate with security agencies by providing useful information to aid the ongoing investigation.
