President Bola Tinubu on Monday evening met behind closed doors with Nigeria’s Service Chiefs at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, amid growing security concerns across the country.

The high-level security meeting commenced at about 6:01 p.m. local time, as the heads of the armed forces and other top security officials arrived at the forecourt of the Aso Rock Villa and were ushered into the President’s office.

Although the specific agenda of the meeting was not disclosed as of press time, the engagement is Tinubu’s first formal meeting with the military high command since the swearing-in of General Christopher Musa (retd.) as the new Minister of Defence on December 4.

The meeting is also taking place against the backdrop of worsening security challenges nationwide, including the continued captivity of 115 students abducted from a Catholic boarding school in November, a development that has heightened public anxiety.

Last month, on November 26, President Tinubu declared a national security emergency, ordering fresh recruitment into security agencies as part of measures to strengthen internal security. He also directed the withdrawal of police personnel from VIP protection duties to boost frontline policing and improve response to security threats.

Monday’s meeting further comes days after the Senate approved the President’s request to deploy Nigerian troops to the Republic of Benin following an attempted coup in the neighbouring country. The deployment was aimed at supporting regional stability and safeguarding Nigeria’s strategic and economic interests in West Africa.

The outcome of the meeting is expected to shape ongoing and future security operations as the administration intensifies efforts to address kidnapping, insurgency, and other security threats facing the nation.
