The Dangote Group has appointed renowned economist and former Director at the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Dr Mahmud Hassan, as its new Group Chief Economist, in a move aimed at strengthening the conglomerate’s economic advisory and policy intelligence capabilities.

The appointment was announced in a statement released by the Group on Monday, which noted that Hassan’s expertise would be critical as the company navigates heightened global and domestic market volatility.

In his new role, Dr Hassan will serve as the Group’s principal adviser on economic strategy, macroeconomic trends, and policy implications, reporting directly to the President of the Group, Aliko Dangote. He is expected to provide strategic economic insights to support decision-making across Dangote Group’s diverse business portfolio.

Dangote Group operates across multiple sectors of the Nigerian and African economies, including oil and gas, cement, fertiliser, sugar, salt, and other consumer goods, with expanding footprints across the continent and beyond.

According to the statement, Dr Hassan brings extensive experience in economic research, policy formulation, and regional integration. Beyond Nigeria, he has played a key role in advancing economic cooperation across Africa, having served as a lead consultant to the African Union Commission on trade integration initiatives and the establishment of the African Monetary Fund.

Dr Hassan holds a PhD in Economics and an MSc in Energy Economics and Policy from the University of Surrey, United Kingdom, as well as a BSc in Economics from Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria. He is also an alumnus of the Harvard Kennedy School.

In addition, he holds professional certifications as a Bank Examiner and an Anti-Money Laundering and Combating the Financing of Terrorism (AML/CFT) Analyst. He is a Fellow of several professional bodies, including the Nigerian Statistical Association, the Chartered Institute of Bankers of Nigeria, and the Compliance Institute of Nigeria.

A prolific researcher, Dr Hassan has published widely in the areas of macroeconomics, monetary policy, energy economics, and financial engineering. Alongside his corporate responsibilities, he remains active in academia as a visiting professor at several Nigerian universities and currently serves as President of the Nigerian Association for Energy Economics.

The Dangote Group said the appointment underscores Dangote Industries Limited’s commitment to deep economic insight, rigorous analysis, and informed policy engagement as it responds to evolving market dynamics across Nigeria, Africa, and the global economy.
