NDDC MOURNS BAYELSA DEPUTY GOVERNOR EWHRUDJAKPO, SUSPENDS PROJECT COMMISSIONING
Agency Report

The Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) has expressed deep condolences to the Government and people of Bayelsa State following the death of the state’s Deputy Governor, Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo, and announced the suspension of the commissioning of projects in the state as a mark of respect.
The decision was disclosed in a statement issued on Monday in Port Harcourt and jointly signed by the Chairman of the NDDC Governing Board, Mr Chiedu Ebie, and the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Dr Samuel Ogbuku.
According to the statement, the inauguration of projects earlier scheduled to hold in Bayelsa State on December 16, 2025, has been shelved in honour of the late deputy governor.
“As a mark of respect for the departed Deputy Governor, the NDDC Board and Management have shelved the commissioning of projects in Bayelsa State, which was initially scheduled for December 16, 2025,” the commission said.
The NDDC described Ewhrudjakpo as a man of integrity, candour and unwavering commitment to public service, noting that his diligence and exceptional work ethic earned him a reputation as a tireless and dedicated leader.
The commission recalled his contributions to the development of Bayelsa State, particularly during his tenure as Commissioner for Works, where he played a significant role in advancing infrastructural development across the state.
“His life was defined by service, sacrifice and a resolute commitment to the common good,” the statement noted, adding that Ewhrudjakpo served Bayelsa State and Nigeria with humility, sincerity and patriotism.
The commission further stated that his leadership style was marked by integrity, simplicity and devotion to humanity, describing his legacy as one that would continue to inspire future generations.
“His legacy of selfless service, principled leadership and devotion to humanity will endure and continue to inspire generations yet unborn,” the NDDC added.
The commission prayed for divine comfort and strength for the family of the deceased, as well as the government and people of Bayelsa State, while asking God to grant Ewhrudjakpo eternal rest.
Ewhrudjakpo’s death on Sunday, December 14, 2025, after a brief illness, plunged Bayelsa State into mourning and triggered an outpouring of tributes from political leaders, institutions and stakeholders across the Niger Delta and beyond.
A seasoned administrator and public servant, Ewhrudjakpo previously served as Bayelsa State Commissioner for Works and later represented Bayelsa West Senatorial District in the 9th Senate of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. He was widely known for his diligence, accessibility and commitment to grassroots development.
As Deputy Governor, he was recognised for his hands-on approach to governance and active involvement in policy implementation, earning him respect as a principled and hardworking leader. Following his passing, the Bayelsa State Government suspended official activities and declared a period of mourning in his honour.
Several organisations and government agencies, including the NDDC, have since adjusted their programmes in the state as a mark of respect, underscoring the impact of Ewhrudjakpo’s leadership and the high esteem in which he was held across the region.
