The Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in Kogi State, Mr. Tenimu Etuku, confirmed the incident in Lokoja, attributing the crash to excessive speeding.
According to Etuku, the victims were passengers in a commercial bus that reportedly left Kano on Monday evening en route to Auchi and Benin before the accident occurred at about 9:40 a.m. on Tuesday.
“From the manifest, the ill-fated bus departed Kano on Monday evening heading to Auchi/Benin before the unfortunate incident. The cause of the accident was excessive speeding,” Etuku said.
He disclosed that out of the 19 survivors, four sustained varying degrees of injuries ranging from bruises to fractures and were immediately rushed to a nearby hospital for medical attention.
Etuku added that FRSC operatives who carried out the rescue operation deposited the corpses of the two deceased victims at the morgue of the Kogi Specialist Hospital in Lokoja.
The sector commander urged motorists to exercise caution and adhere strictly to traffic rules and regulations, especially during the Yuletide period, to prevent avoidable crashes.
“Motorists and other road users must drive carefully and obey traffic rules to avoid such tragic incidents and the loss of precious lives,” he said.
