‎The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has traced his political roots to 1999, insisting that his long-standing experience in governance gives him a clear understanding of party politics and power dynamics in Nigeria.

‎Wike made the assertion during a wide-ranging media parley held on December 29, 2025, where he addressed internal party disputes, leadership crises, and allegations surrounding political ambition and influence.

‎Recalling his early political journey, Wike said he held significant responsibilities at the grassroots level at the dawn of Nigeria’s Fourth Republic, stressing that his rise in politics was not built on sudden wealth or opportunism.

‎“I had my first degree, my second degree, and by 1999, I was already chairman of one of the most important local governments in this country. I have never been a contractor; I was in government,” he said.

‎The former Rivers State governor used the occasion to criticize what he described as attempts to run political parties like private businesses, warning that money alone cannot replace structure, loyalty, and experience.

‎According to him, many of the crises rocking political parties stem from unchecked ambition and disregard for established processes, adding that politics requires patience, negotiation, and respect for internal democracy.

‎Wike also defended his political decisions over the years, noting that risks taken at critical moments particularly during difficult election periods defined true commitment, not last-minute alignments when outcomes are already clear.

‎He maintained that his political relevance was built over decades of service and electoral battles, not media hype or personal wealth, insisting that history and records speak louder than claims.
