Two people have been confirmed dead while 16 others sustained varying degrees of injuries following a fuel tanker crash near St. Louis College, close to the Polo Field Club Roundabout, in Jos, Plateau State.
The accident occurred on Sunday evening when a fully laden tanker reportedly lost its brakes shortly after the Plateau State Specialist Hospital Roundabout and rammed into several vehicles along the route.
Confirming the incident on Monday, the Public Education Officer of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in Plateau State, Peter Longsan, said emergency responders arrived swiftly at the scene to carry out rescue operations.
According to Longsan, a total of 18 persons were involved in the crash, with two male adults dying on the spot. Sixteen others who sustained injuries were rushed to the Plateau State Specialist Hospital and Bingham University Teaching Hospital (BUTH) for medical treatment, while the bodies of the deceased were deposited at BUTH’s morgue.
He explained that the crash was reported to the FRSC at about 6:49 p.m., prompting immediate deployment of rescue teams. Eyewitnesses said the tanker descended uncontrollably after losing its brakes before colliding with five other vehicles and coming to rest.
To prevent further disaster, security and emergency agencies cordoned off the area and diverted traffic. Longsan noted that there was no spillage of the tanker’s contents, significantly reducing the risk of a fire outbreak.
Agencies involved in the operation included the FRSC, Nigeria Police Force, Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps, Nigerian Army, Federal Fire Service, Operation Rainbow, Vehicle Inspection Officers, the Nigerian Red Cross Society, and local vigilante groups. The petroleum product was later safely transloaded, and all wrecked vehicles were removed from the road.
Longsan said the rescue and clearance operation lasted into the night, adding that the road had been fully reopened to traffic by Monday morning.
The Plateau State Sector Commander of the FRSC, Olajide E. Mogaji, commended the swift response and collaboration among the various agencies and thanked the community for their cooperation. He urged motorists to remain vigilant, avoid distractions, and practice defensive driving, especially during the festive season and beyond.
Mogaji also advised road users to promptly report emergencies by calling the FRSC toll-free number 122, stressing that road safety remains a shared responsibility.
