A United States Congressman, Riley Moore, has defended President Donald Trump over the recent US airstrikes in Nigeria, insisting that the operation was carried out to promote peace and security, not to instigate war.

Moore made the remarks in a post on X on Monday, following criticism of the airstrikes reportedly carried out against Islamic State (ISIS) targets on Christmas Day. He said the coordinated strikes were aimed at protecting thousands of Christians in Nigeria who, according to him, face persistent violence and threats to their lives.

“President Trump is not trying to bring war to Nigeria; he’s bringing peace and security to Nigeria and to the thousands of Christians who face horrific violence and death,” Moore said.

He added that the airstrikes, conducted in coordination with the Nigerian government, had given renewed hope to Christians in the country who have been victims of attacks by extremist groups.

The US military operation was earlier announced by President Trump via his Truth Social platform, where he disclosed that American forces carried out precision strikes on ISIS camps in Sokoto State. The United States Africa Command (AFRICOM) later confirmed that the operation resulted in multiple terrorist casualties.

Nigeria’s Federal Government also confirmed the strikes, describing them as part of an ongoing counterterrorism partnership between Nigeria and the United States aimed at degrading terrorist networks.

However, the development sparked criticism from some quarters, with concerns raised over Nigeria’s sovereignty and the potential risk to civilian lives.

Moore dismissed the concerns, arguing that the intervention was necessary to halt attacks on Christians. He recalled that Trump had previously warned about what he described as the “slaughter” of Christians in Nigeria.

The airstrikes come amid heightened international attention on religious violence in Nigeria, following Trump’s designation of the country as a “Country of Particular Concern” over alleged persecution of Christians.
