A major fire on Monday gutted several shops and vehicles at the Sokoto Mechanic Village, popularly known as Buzaye Garage.

The blaze, which reportedly began around 10 a.m., is believed to have been triggered by an electrical fault.

The mechanic village serves as a key repair hub for motorists in Sokoto State and neighbouring Niger Republic.

Efforts by the Federal Fire Service, Sokoto State Fire Service, and local residents to control the blaze proved unsuccessful, as the fire continued to rage for several hours.

A section of the mechanic village, which houses Mercedes-Benz repair workshops and spare parts shops, was severely affected.

Many of the vehicles destroyed reportedly belonged to customers from Sokoto and neighbouring Niger Republic.

Confirming the incident, Engr. Abdulkadir Muhammad, Chairman of the Nigerian Automobile Technicians Association (NATA), Buzaye Unit, said several mechanics lost both their workshops and customers’ vehicles.

He added that the exact number of shops and vehicles affected could not be immediately determined, as the fire had not yet been fully extinguished at the time of reporting.

Engr. Muhammad attributed the scale of the damage to the presence of flammable materials and gas cylinders used for welding in the area.

He appealed to the Sokoto State Government to provide support to the affected members, noting that the last government intervention following a similar incident occurred more than a decade ago.
