Nigerian filmmaker Kunle Afolayan has announced the release date for the second season of his epic series, Anikulapo.
In a recent Instagram post, Afolayan shared an image from the first season of Anikulapo, announcing that the second season will premiere on Netflix on January 30.
“Anikulapo series season 2 coming on 30 January on @naijaonnetflix. Are you ready?” he wrote.
In July 2024, Afolayan disclosed that the second season of Anikulapo was filmed in Ghana in collaboration with the country’s National Film Authority.
He later introduced several new cast members in October 2024, including former BBNaija housemate Okusaga Adeoluwa, Kiekie, Antar Laniyan, Saidi Balogun, Teniola Aladese, Nico Claudio, and Oyinbo Ibile.
The first season, Anikulapo: Rise of the Spectre, a six-part series produced by Afolayan, premiered on Netflix on March 1.
The mini-series, filmed at Kunle Afolayan Production (KAP) film village in Oyo State, serves as a sequel to Anikulapo, the award-winning 2022 film.
In September 2022, Afolayan released Anikulapo as a standalone movie, starring Kunle Remi and Bimbo Ademoye in the lead roles.
The film follows the story of Saro, a young cloth weaver who is brought back to life by a mystical bird after being beaten to death for having an affair with Arolake, the youngest wife of the Alaafin of Oyo.
Rise of the Spectre continues the narrative as a series, chronicling Saro’s return from death. Confused and dazed, Saro is tasked by the guardians of the afterlife to complete a mission he believes to be impossible.
The series features a star-studded cast including Sola Sobowale, Owobo Ogunde, Jide Kosoko, Taiwo Hassan, Gabriel Afolayan, and Lateef Adedimeji.
Other actors appearing in the series include Layi Wasabi, Eyiyemi Afolayan, Ronke Oshodi-Oke, Moji Afolayan, Aisha Lawal, Uzee Usman, Adeniyi Johnson, and Funky Mallam.
