Former House of Representatives member Dachung Bagos has stated that he and other politicians are defecting to other parties due to the perceived failures of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Bagos made the remarks on Tuesday during an interview on Channels Television’s The Morning Brief, shortly after announcing his defection from the PDP to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

He stated, “We are not changing parties for personal political ambition. We are joining a platform that gives our people a voice and offers leadership we can trust to address critical issues.

“We are not switching parties out of sycophancy. We are moving because the PDP has failed at this moment and is currently irredeemable. The platform that aligns with our ideology is where we find ourselves today,” the former lawmaker explained.

His remarks follow a wave of defections from the PDP to the APC and the African Democratic Congress (ADC), driven by internal crises within the party.

Bagos, who officially joined the APC on Monday, said his decision was guided by the party’s agenda, which aligns with the concerns of the people of Plateau State. He stressed that effective governance is about policy and agenda, not party affiliation.

“Governance goes beyond party lines. It is about the agendas on the table that you can present to your people as real solutions,” he said.

Bagos also noted that President Bola Tinubu has reiterated the importance of state police, and that the current administration has begun addressing the issue in its governance approach.

Bagos said, “If he has re-emphasized the issue of local government autonomy, it ensures that every state can hold local government elections.

“We want capable individuals, not just ‘sons of somebody,’ to occupy positions like local government chairmanships. We want to inspire young people who have never believed in politics to engage and have faith in the political process.”

His defection followed the recent move of Plateau State Governor Caleb Muftwang into the ruling APC.
