SIX KWARA VIGILANTES DETAINED BY SOLDIERS IN EDO STATE RELEASED

Six vigilante operatives from Kwara State, who were arrested by the Nigerian Army on December 31, 2025, along the Auchi–Ikpeshi highway in Akoko-Edo Local Government Area, Edo State, have been released following a thorough investigation.
The development was confirmed by the Edo State Police Command spokesperson, SP Adetoun Ejire Adeyemi, in a statement issued in Ilorin on Tuesday.
“The Kwara State Police Command wishes to confirm that on Wednesday, 31st December 2025, it received six vigilante members who had been earlier arrested by personnel of the Nigerian Army along the Auchi–Ikpeshi Road in Akoko-Edo Local Government Area, Edo State,” the statement read in part.
“The vigilantes, who were travelling in a vehicle belonging to Ifelodun Local Government Area of Kwara State, were formally handed over to the Kwara State Police Command by the Brigade Commander of 22 Armoured Brigade, Sobi Barracks, Ilorin, Brigadier General N.N. Rume, for investigation and profiling.
“After a thorough inquiry, it was confirmed that the individuals are legitimate members of a vigilante group working alongside recognised security agencies in efforts to combat banditry and other criminal activities.
“As a result, having been cleared of any wrongdoing, the vigilante members were released to their respective leaders,” the statement added.
Kwara State Commissioner of Police, Ojo Adekimi, reiterated the command’s commitment to collaboration between security agencies and community-based security groups, while urging all outfits to operate strictly within the law.
He assured the public that the command remains resolute in safeguarding the safety and security of all residents of the state.
