Oyo State Governor, Engr. Seyi Makinde, has condemned the recent bandit attack on the National Park Service (NPS) office in Oloka Village, Oriire Local Government Area, which claimed the lives of five forest guards.

The governor described the incident as “a devastating loss of the lives of personnel in the course of carrying out their lawful duties” and prayed for the repose of the victims’ souls.

In a statement shared via his official Facebook page on Wednesday, Makinde said, “Preliminary investigations by the security agencies indicate that this was a cross-border attack carried out by bandits.

“The security agencies are already working together to address this incident and seek the support of residents in the area to cooperate with them in their intelligence gathering.”

He further appealed to residents in Oriire and other border communities to remain calm, assuring that security personnel had been deployed to restore normalcy.

“Our administration will leave no stone unturned to respond decisively to prevent a recurrence of such attacks,” the governor added.

Earlier today, Hotjist had reported that residents and stakeholders of Oriire Local Government Area had appealed to Governor Makinde for urgent intervention following the attack, expressing fears over the increasing insecurity in the region.

The assault, which occurred on Tuesday night, left at least five NPS forest guards dead and has heightened concerns about the security of communities along the Oyo-Kwara border.

Oloka and surrounding areas have previously been used as hideouts by armed groups fleeing neighboring states, according to local sources. Security agencies have intensified patrols and are working to apprehend the perpetrators.
