Nigeria’s Super Eagles secured a place in the semi-finals of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations after a convincing 2–0 win over Algeria at the Grand Stade de Marrakech on Saturday.
Algeria’s Desert Foxes, who had conceded only one goal prior to the quarter-final, were overwhelmed by Nigeria’s sustained pressure and sharp second-half execution.
After a goalless first half in which Nigeria dominated possession and chances, the breakthrough came two minutes after the restart. Victor Osimhen powered home a header from Bruno Onyemaechi’s precise cross in the 47th minute to give the Super Eagles the lead — his fourth goal of the tournament.
Nigeria doubled their advantage 10 minutes later through a well-worked team move. Alex Iwobi sliced open the Algerian defence with an outside-of-the-boot pass, Osimhen squared unselfishly, and Akor Adams calmly rounded goalkeeper Luca Zidane before finishing into an empty net.
The Super Eagles had controlled the contest long before the goals, dictating play and creating multiple chances in the first half, with Algeria defender Ramy Bensebaini producing several goal-line clearances to keep his side in the game.
Despite Wilfred Ndidi picking up a yellow card, Nigeria’s defence remained resolute, while late substitutions including Moses Simon helped see out the match with ease.
The victory sets up a highly anticipated semi-final showdown against tournament hosts Morocco. With their attack clicking and confidence growing, Nigeria appear firmly on course in their quest for a fourth AFCON title.
