Ebonyi State Governor, Francis Nwifuru, has sacked all government appointees from Amasiri community in Afikpo Local Government Area, dissolved the community’s town development union and village leadership, and dethroned its traditional ruler following a deadly attack that left four people beheaded in Okporojo Community, Oso Edda, Edda Local Government Area of the state.

The governor announced the sweeping sanctions on Saturday during an on-the-spot assessment visit to Okporojo, where he addressed residents, community leaders, security agencies and government officials.

The attack, which reportedly occurred on January 29, 2026, involved unidentified armed men who allegedly invaded Okporojo community, set houses ablaze, killed four residents, and took away their severed heads.

Visibly angry, Nwifuru described the incident as barbaric and unacceptable, stressing that such brutality had no place in Ebonyi State.

“So on this note, for the time being, the development union executive and all of the villages in Amasiri communities are hereby dissolved. The traditional ruler certificate is hereby withdrawn. All government appointees from Amasiri are hereby sacked,” the governor declared.

He further ordered the removal of all village heads across Amasiri autonomous communities, adding that anyone from the community holding government appointment, “from the management committee down to commissioners,” had been relieved of their duties with immediate effect.

Nwifuru warned that the government would decisively deal with those responsible for the killings, assuring residents of Okporojo that the lives lost would not be in vain.

He urged residents to remain calm and avoid reprisals, noting that retaliatory violence would only escalate the crisis.

The governor revealed that the conflict between the communities had persisted for years despite several reconciliation efforts, including boundary agreements that were allegedly violated.

“My message to the people of Amasiri is to have a rethink because violence will never lead them anywhere. This matter has reached a point of no return if provocations continue,” he warned.

Nwifuru emphasized that his visit was a clear signal that his administration would no longer tolerate lawlessness or disregard for the rule of law, pledging that firm actions would be taken to restore lasting peace in the affected areas.

Among those affected by the mass sack is the Commissioner for Tertiary Education, Prof. Amari Omaka (SAN).

The governor directed all dismissed appointees to immediately hand over government properties in their possession, including official vehicles, to the Secretary to the State Government.

Videos of the attack circulating on social media showed houses engulfed in flames, as residents cried out for urgent intervention from the state government and security agencies.
