An Improvised Explosive Device (IED) detonated in the early hours of Wednesday along the Gusau–Funtua highway in Zamfara State, damaging a trailer loaded with cement and causing major traffic disruption.

The explosion occurred around Unguwar Mai Chida village as the truck, travelling from Sokoto to Kaduna, passed through the area. The blast severely damaged the head of the vehicle. However, no life was lost, as the driver, identified as Dauda Adamu, was rescued alive.

Local sources alleged that the device was planted by suspected terrorists. A resident, Samaila, said the explosion happened just hours after a joint team of police and military operatives cleared and reopened the Kucheri–Danjibga–Keta road in Tsafe Local Government Area, which had been inaccessible for over a month due to planted explosives.

He noted that security operatives had earlier engaged in a prolonged exchange of gunfire during the clearance operation and suggested that the IED that struck the truck might have been among those initially planted to target security personnel.

Another eyewitness, Lawali, a commercial driver, said motorists assisted in rescuing the injured driver from the wreckage. He described the explosion as extremely loud, causing panic among road users who parked at a safe distance until security personnel arrived to secure and clear the highway.

Confirming the incident, DSP Yazid Abubakar, spokesperson of the Zamfara State Police Command, said the Explosive Ordnance Department had been deployed to the scene.

The incident comes days after a Nigerian Army Armoured Personnel Carrier reportedly struck a planted explosive device along the Keta–Danjibga road in Tsafe Local Government Area, underscoring ongoing security concerns in the region.
