POLITICAL INTIMIDATION CAN’T STOP SHARIA PRACTISE IN NIGERIA, ISLAMIC COUNCIL TELLS US LAWMAKERS

The Supreme Council for Shariah in Nigeria (SCSN) has turned down a suggestion from U.S. lawmakers about how Sharia law is practiced in the country.
In Nigeria, Sharia law works together with other types of laws, like those made by the government and traditional customs. This is mainly in 12 northern states where most people are Muslim. These states started using Sharia as their main law for civil and criminal matters in 1999.
It is regarded as the religious, moral, and legal framework of Islam. US lawmakers have been asking more and more for the law to be removed because they say Christians in Nigeria are being persecuted. The federal government says this is not true.
This argument was repeated in a report that came out on Monday and was sent to the White House.
In a statement on Wednesday, Nafiu Ahmad, the head of the SCSN, said the council disagrees with the US lawmakers‘ report. He explained that Sharia is a full way of life for Muslims, covering spiritual, moral, social, and legal areas.
“No power or authority can arrogantly make Muslims relinquish its practice in response to external pressure, misinformation, or political intimidation,” the statement reads.
The statement noted that Sharia in Nigeria is backed by the constitution which upholds freedom of religion and permits adherents to conduct personal matters in accordance with their faith.
The statement added that Nigeria is a sovereign, multi-religious nation with a plural legal system, deeming external interference as attempts to undermine the country’s sovereignty, constitutional order, and the fundamental principle of religious freedom.
The SCSN also rejected reports of a “Christian genocide” in the country.
“This claim misrepresents Nigeria’s security crisis and detracts from the truth. The violence confronting the nation stems from terrorism, banditry, organized criminality, and governance deficits,” the statement added.
