The All Progressives Congress in Osun State has criticised Governor Ademola Adeleke’s Chief of Staff, Mr. Kazeem Akinleye, over an alleged threat reportedly made to payroll audit consultant Saadat Bakrin-Ottun during a phone call.
The dispute stems from disagreements between the Osun State government and Bakrin-Ottun regarding the implementation of a staff audit report conducted by consultant Sally Tibbot. Bakrin-Ottun accused the government of concealing multi-billion-naira fraud uncovered during the verification exercise. The state government rejected the claims, asserting that Tibbot had allegedly misclassified active employees as “ghost workers” to inflate consultancy fees.
In a statement, APC spokesperson Kola Olabisi said Akinleye’s alleged involvement in the matter indicated he was unfit for his position and demanded his immediate resignation, calling his tenure “a monumental shame” on the state. The party also accused the administration of being run by proxy and described the Chief of Staff as wielding excessive influence.
Responding, Governor Adeleke’s spokesperson, Olawale Rasheed, dismissed the opposition’s criticism as politically motivated and desperate. He defended Akinleye as an efficient and competent chief of staff, praising his role in preventing alleged financial loss and ensuring the integrity of government operations.
Rasheed emphasised that Akinleye’s oversight protected the state from potential fraud associated with Tibbot’s report. He described the Chief of Staff as a consensus builder who upholds due process and supports the governor in delivering democratic dividends to the people of Osun State.
“The opposition’s reaction reflects political frustration,” Rasheed said, highlighting past APC mismanagement of local government funds exceeding N200 billion and alleged attempts to undermine the electoral will of the people. He urged Bakrin-Ottun to submit any evidence of wrongdoing to relevant anti-corruption agencies instead of pursuing a public media trial.
